Description
The province of Tungurahua, located in central Ecuador, is one of the most densely populated regions in the country. Additionally, the extreme climate of the western part of the province causes an annual water deficit in the Ambato River basin of about 40% during the dry season. More than 90% of the water for the region comes from the Páramo, and it is one of the most vulnerable freshwater ecosystems in Ecuador. Páramo soils play a crucial role in collecting water from fog, rain, and glacial run-off by releasing water slowly into the lower lying areas.
